Tips for Showing Your Home on Rainy Days

The Seay Realty Group just checked the forecast for our area: rain, rain & more rain! Yikes! If your home is on the market, here are a few tips to help create a pleasant showing experience for potential buyers.

Interior 06.jpgLight and Bright! Make your home a bright and welcoming place by leaving your lights on, opening your blinds, and use lighting to create a warm cozy feeling. Create a toasty feeling using lamps and electric candles.

Check for leaks. Especially after extended periods of rain like we’ve had here. See our blog post from October 10 for ways to inspect your home for water damage.

Smell anything? Smells in your home can be enhanced on rainy days, so be sure you have addressed pet odors, food odors or any mystery odors. Do ask a trusted friend to perform a “sniff test” around your home! Bad smells can turn off  potential buyers, and we get used to the way our homes smell.

Flowers bring the sunshine in! A bouquet of fresh flowers will add a smile to your visitors faces. Think yellow (sunshine) or use warm colors in your bouquet.

cookies.jpgCookies! An “oldie but a goody”, as the saying goes. The scent of baked cookies adds a homey, warm feeling to any space. Stick with snickerdoodles or sugar cookies – the crumbs from chocolate chips could leave a chocolaty mess in your home. oops!

Porches and Decks. Check the condition of each to protect visitors against slips and falls on a rainy day.

Entry Mats. Give potential buyers a place to wipe their feet before entering your home. Make sure your mats are in great condition. Plain is better then cutesy. Rough, coir mats do a good job brushing debris off shoes & boots. A boot tray is helpful to corral the boots of your guests.

mintsEntry Way Extras. A basket of disposable booties in a basket by your front door will not only protect your floors, but can present a warm invitation to your home. Make sure there’s a bench for people to sit while putting the booties on! An indoor rug, in addition to the outdoor mats, will provide additional floor protection. Include a bowl of mints by the entry, and a vessel to collect realtor business cards. An umbrella stand will catch umbrella drips. A place to put raincoats, like hooks or a coat rack, is handy.

Don’t let this recent round of wet weather discourage you. By using these tips, potential buyers just might remember your house as the warm, welcoming place they would be happy to call home.
