How I Moved Using Facebook!

Facebook2.jpgA client of ours (we’ll call  her Carol) recently met with us because she wanted to downsize her home. She  was lamenting to us about how she was going to get rid of her extra stuff. Our teen asked why not sell it on Facebook? Carol was intrigued, as were we! So we sat down with our teen and a group of their friends, picked their brain and came away with a plethora of ways to use Facebook that could be used in the moving process!

Carol applied their suggestions and discovered Facebook was a GREAT way to handle not just selling items she wouldn’t need for her downsize, but for nearly all aspects of her move! Here’s how she did it:

First, she joined local Facebook groups focused on her community at large as well as a few Facebook sales groups. Here are a few to get you started:

Community Groups (ask for recommendations & advice locally):

  • Flower Mound Cares
  • Flower Mound 2.0
  • Highland Village Cares
  • Lewisville Cares
  • Lantana Life
  • Argyle, Texas

Garage Sale Groups (to buy and sell merchandise locally):

  • Garage Sale Flower Mound
  • Argyle, Flower Mound, Lantana, Highland Village Online Garage Sale
  • Lewisville Online Garage Sale
  • Lewisville/highlandvillage/flowermound grapevine online garage sale
  • Lewisville Buying and Selling
  • Coppell, Lewisville, Grapevine, Carrollton Online Yard Sale

Neighborhood Groups – check to see if your neighborhood or HOA might have a Facebook Group for residents.

Mom-Computer.jpgOnce she had joined a few groups, Carol used Facebook very successfully to do these moving tasks:

FINDING MOVING BOXES: People constantly recycle their moving boxes using Facebook. Carol used her Facebook Community and Neighborhood groups to find free moving boxes as she started packing. (She got lucky and also found inexpensive moving blankets and free packing paper!) She checked her groups almost daily for moving boxes after discovering they are high demand items that go fast! Once she had her boxes, she started sorting the items in closets & cupboards into keep (she boxed them), sell (those were put on a table in the garage for eventual sale) and throw away.

SELLING HER STUFF: Carol focused on selling extra furniture and large home goods (rugs, pictures, lamps) right away via Facebook. She took pictures & measurements of the items she was selling and made sure her posts had thorough descriptions. She looked at past sales listings to get an idea about pricing.

She posted her things on all the garage sale groups she belonged to and was pleasantly surprised that Facebook was a highly successful way to sell home goods!

Garage-sale1.jpgHOLDING A MOVING SALE: When it came time for her moving sale, Carol advertised it using the Facebook garage sale groups and neighborhood groups she had joined. She checked her community groups and discovered some didn’t allow moving sale ads (others did).  She took pictures of many of the items she was selling and posted those, too. She placed (bright colored) signs at the main entrances to her neighborhood with direction arrows leading potential buyers to her home.

DONATING TO CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS: Carol turned to Facebook and asked for recommendations from her Community and Neighborhood groups to find  charitable organizations that would pick up from her home and give her a receipt for her donations (for tax time).

SPRUCING UP HER HOME FOR SALE: Carol needed painting, window washing, carpet cleaning and yard clean-up done before she listed her home. She went to her Facebook community groups to ask for recommendations and received several for each job. She was able to get the work done for a reasonable price, quickly.

logo-lone-blackletterspicture1087x380.pngHOME SALE: Carol worked with a realtor (The Seay Realty Group!) to sell her home. Once the house was listed, Carol put a link to the sales listing on her own Facebook page to further get the word out, which The Seay Realty Group greatly appreciated!

MOVING DAY! Carol again turned to Facebook to get recommendations for local movers and received several. She called the top three and received several estimates. Carol had a great experience with her move!

SETTLING IN TO HER NEW COMMUNITY: Carol was now convinced that Facebook was a very powerful tool for her to use to learn about her new Community. She used Facebook’s search engine to find new Community and Neighborhood groups to join, events going on in her area, Women’s networking groups to join and even a book club! Carol adjusted to her new surroundings quickly, thanks to Facebook.
