Around Town: Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 28th this year. As a Federal Holiday, you most likely will have the day off, giving you a nice long weekend!

According to AAA, more than 41.5 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, the majority by automobile. Yikes! If that sounds daunting and you plan to make Memorial Day a “stay-cation” this year, here are a few local events to consider as you celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer:

Carrollton:

Fishing family.jpgYouth Fishing Day, May 26, 2018 9a.m. to 12p.m. at Josey Ranch Park Pond, 1440 Keller Springs Road, Carrollton TX 75006

Free Event for children 16 and under sponsored by The City of Carrollton and the Texas Junior Anglers. Registration the morning of event (no pre-registration). The Josey Ranch park pond will be stocked with adult catfish. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to winners in 3 age categories. It is recommended children bring their own equipment; however, TJA will provide loaner rods, reels, bait and tackle to those who need them. More Information.

Coppell:

Memorial Day Weekend Concert, May 26, 2018 @ 6:30 pm, First Methodist Church of Coppell, 420 S. Heartz Road, Coppell TX 75019

This annual celebration honors our country and those who have served. 5:30 p.m. – Free meal of hot dogs, chips, dessert and drinks followed by a patriotic pops concert at 6:30 p.m. honoring veterans past and present. This annual celebration honors our country and those who have served.

Dallas:

The 8th annual Dallas Memorial March, sponsored by Carry the Load, honors and celebrates our nation’s heroes and is an event to remember! Funds raised support programs that provide direct services to our nation’s Military, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, First Responders and their families. Register Here.

Memorial Day at the Dallas Arboretum, May 25-28: The Arboretum will offer free admission into the main garden all four days for active duty members and veterans of the US Military, and first responders with a valid photo ID. Festivities include face painting and a petting zoo, four days of live music, hot dogs and root beer floats at the Terrace Café. Wind Sculptures in Motion exhibit features the Kinetic Art of Lyman Whitaker. More Information

Dallas Syphony Orchestra’s Memorial Day Concert & Fireworks, May 28th, 8:15 p.m., Flagpole Hill, 8100 Doran Circle, Dallas TX 75238

Free concert will honor those who have served our great nation. A fireworks display at the end of the concert will amaze and move you.

Flower Mound:

Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 28, 9 a.m., the Flower Mound Senior Center, 2701 W. Windsor Drive, 75028.

The community is invited to honor fallen soldiers of war at this annual event. Featuring keynote speakers from the military and local leaders, Color Guard, patriotic music and bagpipers. More information

Taps at Sundown on the Mound, Monday, May 28 at 8:15 p.m. – a brief event sponsored by The Mound Foundation will present Taps, and retire the colors for a Memorial Day observance at Sundown. The event is short, less than 15 minutes. Observers are strongly encouraged to apply bug spray, as this is chigger season. The Summit Club will place 20 flags along the Mound’s frontage, dedicated to heroes who fell after their service due to struggles with PTSD.

Lewisville:

Fiesta Charra, May 26, 2018 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fiesta Charra, Lewisville Rodeo Grounds, 101 Parkway Drive, Lewisville TX 75057

Fiesta Charra is a demonstration of traditional Charreada activities – traditional dress and horsemanship performances based on the animal husbandry practices in the Haciendas of Old Mexico. Free admission, but $5 parking More Information
