3D Printed Homes Planned for 2019
The first permitted 3D home was created in approximately 48 hours of printing time, for around $10,000. It’s a tiny home, measuring just 350 square feet, and is currently used as a proof-of-concept in Austin TX. Created by ICON, an Austin-based construction technologies company whose purpose is to make dignified housing the standard for people around the world, the house was created in partnership with the non-profit organization New Story.
New Story brings housing to under-served populations. Their goal is to print a community of homes in an under-served population in 2019. Each house will be between 600 and 800 square feet, and is expected to cost about $4,000 per home.
The Austin TX 3D printed home is the first of its kind in the United States, printed using ICON’s “Vulcan 3D printer” on site. The printer weighs around 2,000 lbs, and is meant to be mobile. The house is a permitted, permanent structure. The finishing touches (roof, windows, doors and electrical/plumbing) were constructed using conventional methods by Alchemy Builders, partners in this project.
ICON’s mission is to allow people to download and print your home in 24 hours for half the cost. While they are not currently working with individuals, their newsletter will keep you updated on 3D home printing progress. Sign up at www.iconbuild.com/contact.
