Tax Free Weekend For Back to School
School starts next week for many of our area districts, so the race is on for our youngest Texans purchasing new school gear! The annual Texas sales tax holiday begins today for students get ready to return to classrooms. The tax-free weekend is now through Sunday, so its time to get those school supplies and clothing items with no tax added to your purchases.
Texas law exempts most clothes, shoes, school supplies and backpacks that are priced less than $100 from sales tax being charged. That could save you about $8 for every $100 that you spend. This even includes items sold online and by phone or mail. Shoppers can also use layaway plans to receive the tax break.
There are some restrictions on items purchased, and how the free weekend applies, so be sure and know before you hit the check-out, to avoid surprises. For a complete list of exclusions and other “fine print”, check out the list from our Texas Comptroller.
